Work Experience / Curation

Chelsea College of Art and Design, October - December 2013

I assisted with the delivery of a six week series of seminars for current MA Fine Art Students. Working closely with the Postgraduate Theory Co-ordinator, I generated discussion between the invited speakers and students. As a culmination of the project I delivered my own seminar, titled 'Click off for a second and make something' exploring contemporary approaches to image making and our digital environment.

Thinking Outside the Box. The Bluecoat, Liverpool May 2010.

I initiated a four person exhibition investigating themes of place and how experience affects our reading of environment. Exhibiting alongside Andrew Bracey, Amelia Crouch and Michael lent we explored the relationships between our practices, exploring connections between painting, sculpture, moving image and text.

Global Studio. The Bluecoat, Liverpool April - June 2010

Co-curated The Royal Standard's contribution to 'Global Studio' at The Bluecoat. The Royal Standard, Liverpool, 2007 - 2010.

I was the chairman and co-director of an artist-led gallery, group studio and social workspace in Liverpool. Working as part of a team of six directors, I gained experience in curating and installing exhibitions and applying for and managing an Arts Council budget of £25,000, along with organising group crits and liaising with artists around the country. I helped co-curate the exhibition 'Navigator' which opened during the 2008 Liverpool Biennial, as well as The Royal Standards contribution to 'No Sole for Sale' at Tate Modern, London in 2010. The organisation continues to grow with a rotating directorship. For more information visit www.the-royal-standard.com

Lecturing 2006 - present

I have lecturing experience within Fine Art education from Manchester Metropolitan University, Chelsea College of Art and Liverpool John Moores University, alongside work as a visiting artist at Anglia Ruskin University, Lincoln University, Kingston College and Liverpool Community College.

I have been responsible for tutor groups, giving one to one tutorials, group discussions, gallery tours. At LJMU I co-planned and delivered a 12 week drawing module at Liverpool john Moores University for first year fine art students, culminating in a final exhibition open to the public.

Artist Educator 2013 - present

I plan and deliver art workshops for children, young people and adults in a variety of settings. Abstract painting techniques are at the core of my teaching, as I encourage participants to experiment with a variety of techniques and materials, gaining a greater understanding of the expressive potential of painting. Recent organisations include The Tetley, Leeds; Abbot Hall, Kendal; Keswick Museum; The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Orleans Park School, Twickenham.

In May and June 2015 I worked with a class of Year 10 GCSE Art Stduents from Cockburn School, to produce artwork in response to the exhibition 'Painting in Time' at the Tetley Gallery, Leeds. Working both at the school and gallery, the project opened up the world of expanded painting through material experimentation and a final public exhibition curated by the students.

In September 2015 I taught an abstract painting workshop for adults, in response to the St Ives exhibition 'Taking Flight' at Abbott Hall Gallery. Initial sketches of the gallery gardens gave way to more abstract interpretations and expressive use of materials, building up to a final painting through learning about colour relationships, mark making and composition.

In August 2014 I planned and delivered a series of three painting workshops at The Walker Art Gallery, based around the 2014 John Moores Painting Prize. Working with children aged 7-12 and their accompanying adult, participants experimented with stencilling, painting and drawing techniques to produce responses to the exhibition.
